That middle class is practically gone today. It no longer exists. They have dropped into the ranks of the poor. The thriving man of independent business standing is fast fading. The corner grocery store is becoming a thing of the past. Concentrated chain-merchandise and banking systems have laid waste to all middle opportunity. That "thin margin of merely well-to-do in between" which the Saturday Evening Post mentioned on September 23, 1916, has dwindled to practically no margin of well-to-do in between. Those suffering on the bottom and the few lords of finance on the top are nearly all that are left.

Сама речь про «отнять и поделить» достойна, конечно, Шарикова или Обамы. Но факты подобраны красиво. Во время кризисов вымывает средний класс. Или даже, сначала вымывает средний класс, а потом наступает затяжной кризис. Статистики, особенно откорректированной по истиной инфляции, я не вижу, но по общим ощущениям видно, что Германия движется в этом направлении.
