Недавно в сад забрели ёжики. Кто считает их милыми животными -- сильно ошибается. Эти сволочи устроили свой набег ночью. Ладно бы просто шуршали, а то впечатление что под окном вовсю пыхтит небольшой паровоз.

Пришлось выйти и осветить им путь. Один экземпляр был относительно небольшим. Второй с небольшую кошку.

Как только на них упал свет, сразу заткнулись, замерли и сделали вид, что я их не заметил.

Ну и что делать? Не выносить же их на руках. Помолчали. Только ушёл в дом, сразу опять включился паровоз. Мало тут нам самолётов туда-сюда летает. (Кстати, вот прямо сейчас какой-то идёт на взлёт, а, значит, шумит во все двигатели.)

Впрочем, ради ежей не стоило и начинать. Тема другая.

Про мягкие путы прогресса

Начну с цитаты. Опять же, вопрос подробно надо раскрывать в другом месте, но очень уж хорошо подходит для введения.

Whenever we introduced a new technological convenience, we had to examine its place in the life of our institution most carefully. The advantages we could enjoy from any new machine were always quite obvious; the bondage we entered by using it was much harder to assess, and much more elusive. Often we were unaware of its negative effects until after long use. By then we had come to rely on it so much, that small disadvantages that came with the use of any one contrivance seemed too trivial to warrant giving it up, or to change the pattern we had fallen into by using it. Nevertheless, when combined with the many other small disadvantages of all the other devices, it added up to a significant and undesirable change in the pattern of our life and work.

This is what I mean by "seduction". The advantages of the machines are so obvious and so desirable, that we tend to become, small step by small step, seduced into ignoring the price we pay for their unthinking use. The emphasis here is on unthinking use, because they all have their good uses. But the most careful thinking and planning is needed to enjoy the good use of any technical contrivance without paying a price for it in human freedom.
